The aim of the study grant programme for secondary education is to try to ensure that young people aged 12 to 16 in rural areas facing economic difficulties have a chance to continue and finish their secondary education.
Situation:
The vast majority of young people in rural areas give up education after finishing primary school. This is in no way due to a lack of interest on their part but rather because the circumstances in which they live force them to stop school. In order to go to class they have to travel several kilometres every day or move to the nearest village. This implies a huge range of difficulties for the families involved, such as transport costs or rent for some kind of reasonably safe, comfortable accommodation to enable their children to develop properly, or the cost of food or school materials, etc. At ANUPAZ we have seen this sort of thing first-hand, since every year a number of girls and boys give up their education because they simply have no alternative. After that, they work with their families, helping to bring up smaller children and carrying out tasks which are not suitable for their age or stage of emotional development.
Through this programme, ANUPAZ hopes to offer them a different choice – the possibility of something which is completely normal and even taken for granted by the majority of young people of their age but which, for them, represents a real source of happiness and a further step towards a better future.
Applicants are put forward by teachers and administrative staff in rural schools on the basis of stipulated criteria (learning abilities, socio-economic hardship, recognition from their schoolmates, good behaviour and a helpful attitude towards others).
ANUPAZ carries out the selection process on the basis of whether the proposals from the schools meet the specified criteria, interviews with the parents and pupils and consultation with teachers and school administration staff where necessary.
Selection criteria – Applicants must be:
- Age 12 – 16
- Living in a rural area (Argentina)
- Currently doing or enrolled in the first year of secondary school
- From a family facing hardship
- Not receiving any other similar support, regardless of which organisation might provide it.
