Our Project: Building Greenhouses in Schools in Modesto Omiste, Potosí Province.
|
|
| |
Poverty in Bolivia is concentrated in rural areas, in particular in the valleys of the Altiplano region, where it affects 75.8% of the indigenous population. This population also has the lowest education levels and a higher incidence of disease, exclusion and discrimination. 90% of the people there grow subsistence crops on poor quality land. Thousands of rural indigenous workers migrate to seek permanent employment, but there are very few secure jobs available. |
|
| |
Natural Resources
In Potosí, ¾ of the arable land is affected by extensive erosion problems. This is critical since only 3% of the country’s land is suitable for farming.
Our project is located in the Altiplano between two Andean mountain ranges at 3,400m. altitude. The climate there is arid with average annual temperatures below 10°. Temperatures fall below freezing more than 100 nights per year; this can occur in any season. Water is generally in short supply. Clear skies most of the year plus the high altitude cause high evaporation rates.
|
|

Freezing and significant temperature differences between day and night mean very few crops can be grown there, a situation exacerbated by low crop yield. |

The 88 pupils and the teachers and staff of the "Rafael Quispe" Rural School in Lampaya, the pupils’ families and, in general, the residents of Lampaya, Corral Blanco, Cuartos, Kellaja and Villa Concepción, for a total of about 400 people. |

To support and promote sustainable, productive development by growing vegetable gardens reserved for the rural school and its community. To provide pupils with fresh, organic food throughout their school years. Better fed children are healthier children who can study more easily and who will, in turn, be able to better nourish and raise their own children later on.
At present, the mortality rate among children under 5 in Potosí is 61% (UNICEF – 2006) and the anemia rate, at 67%, is the highest in the country.
Our next Bulletin will present the practical details of this project: the activities, the timetable for the different phases and the expected results. |

| IN MEMORIAM |
 |
| |
Our Vice-president and Administrator Mr. Constant Heusquin passed away on June 6. |
He was very active in Anupaz Belgium from the outset, demonstrating unflagging interest and constant support. His congeniality and sense of humour, which brightened our events, will be sorely missed. We will always remember this uncomplicated man, who was unfailingly generous to all.
ANUPAZ would like to offer its deepest condolences to his family and to thank them for their generous gesture requesting that any donations in his name be made to ANUPAZ as an expression of sympathy.
Mr. Andrés San Martín y Gómez has been appointed Vice-President. We will introduce him to you in the next Bulletin. |

SPRING ACTIVITIES |
| As we do every year, ANUPAZ has carried out a number of fundraising activities for its projects |
An appeal to the St. Anthony's in Kraainem produced a generous response. Particular thanks go to Ms. Patricia O’ Loghlen, who organised and participated actively in this event, which included a photo exhibition on children in Bolivia, three presentations of our school greenhouse project and distribution of ANUPAZ information sheets. |

The Centre Crousse Plant Exchange on Saturday, May 8, attracted garden enthusiasts as it does every year. The exchange featured inexpensive plants, real finds for those seeking a rare gem and plenty of advice for beginners – all in the lovely villa’s superb park. ANUPAZ participated for the 4th consecutive year, and now our "helpers", with their green thumbs, supply us with whole crates of plants. In addition, the icing on the cake was provided by Isabel, who made beautiful bouquets for us. And, of course, we attached an ANUPAZ project information sheet to each plant we sold. |
Sunday, May 9, was a very sunny Mother’s Day for the big annual Flea Market on Av. de Tervuren in Brussels. This market attracts tens of thousands of visitors – what better showcase for our activities! In the "Association Village" ANUPAZ presented its projects and items for sale, mostly for children, including plenty of toys, books, clothing and some plants and flowers. |

| SOLIDARITY SHOPPING |
In collaboration with Delhaize supermarkets, ANUPAZ offered a simple way to contribute without spending a cent more – Community Weeks. By presenting an ANUPAZ coupon at the cash register, participating shoppers knew that 5% of their purchase price would be donated to the association by Delhaize.
Some took the opportunity to lay in lots of supplies … others made more modest purchases… We hope that this year they’ll plan a major shopping expedition to increase the donations, since we’re planning to repeat the operation. We’ll let you know the exact dates as soon as possible. |
